Do Iraq’s F-16s Have A Future?
So far 2020 has not been a good year for the Iraqi Air Force’s F-16 Fighting Falcon jet fighter bombers. That being said, the future of that fleet isn’t necessarily all that bleak.

In January, U.S.-Iran tensions dramatically escalated with the U.S. assassination of Iranian General Qasem Soleimani in a drone strike in Baghdad and Iranian missile strikes against two bases with U.S. troops in Iraq and Iraqi Kurdistan.

As a result of those heightened tensions, the U.S. began drawing down from several bases across Iraq. As part of that drawdown, American contractors were evacuated from Balad Airbase, where Iraq’s F-16s are based, due to the danger posed by Iran-backed Iraqi militia rocket attacks.
Those American contractors had previously helped Iraq maintain and keep its F-16s operational.

Since then, several of those jets have become grounded due to lack of technical support and maintenance. One senior Iraqi official recently went so far as to say that Iraq’s F-16 fleet “is almost gone.”

At present, Iraq reportedly can no longer continue the routine patrols its F-16s used to carry out over Iraq’s western province of Anbar, where they were keeping an eye out for any Islamic State infiltrations across the Syrian border.

Iraq began receiving its first F-16s in mid-2015 when it was engulfed in the war against the Islamic State. The fighter jets are, by far, the most advanced warplanes the Iraqi Air Force has operated since Saddam Hussein’s rule.

Despite these setbacks over the past six months, Iraq’s F-16s should not be written off just yet.

“Iraq is not likely to write off the significant investment in the F-16 fleet and its pilots,” said Michael Knights, a noted Iraq expert and Lafer Fellow at The Washington Institute for Near East Policy.

“Iraq would not be the first nation to put a segment of its fleet into mothballs or lower the number of flight hours its pilots get due to funding shortfalls: this is happening all over NATO countries,” he added.

U.S. personnel in Iraqi bases, including Balad, have come under rocket attacks carried out by Iran-backed Shiite militias several times over the past year. Baghdad did nothing to combat those groups.

This June, however, the new Iraqi government under Prime Minister Mustafa Al-Kadhimi took a stand. It arrested 14 members of the Kataib Hezbollah group, the prime suspect in many of those rocket attacks.

Such a firm approach by the Iraqi government against such groups could help convince and reassure American contractors that it’s relatively safe to return to Iraq and continue helping Baghdad keep its F-16s operational.

“Protection of foreign citizens is necessary for the F-16 support to resume,” Knights said.

On the one hand, basing Iraq’s F-16s at Balad Air Base was “always troubling due to the presence of both militias and the Islamic State in the area.”

On the other hand, Balad is also “an ideal location from a range perspective, with F-16s being a short-range aircraft and Iraq lacking air-to-air refueling capability.”

Twenty-three F-16IQs perform in fly-over

صورة

The Iraqi Air Force participated in a fly-over during the 100th anniversary of the Iraqi armed forces on 6 January 2021.

The air force flew 23 of their F-16IQs and numerous other aircraft. The combat readiness of the pilots and F-16s continues to play a role in the mission to defeat ISIS.

The showed readiness of the aircraft is doubtful as many F-16IQs (the Iraqi Air Force ordered once 36 F-16C/D Block 52s, of which two crashed during training in the USA), including several of these 23, are not combat ready.

At least ten aircraft of the 34 Vipers of the 9th Fighter Squadron, based at Ballad air base (Iraq), are not able to fly at all. Over 50% of the displayed 23 are only able to fly, but lack working radars and avionics to operate with weapons and show other shortcomings. In Western thoughts and operations, these aircraft were not allowed to fly at all.

This all is caused by budget problems of the Iraqi armed forces, logistical problems, a decrease in contractor support to maintain the Block 52s (caused by the bad security situation in Iraq) and less trained pilots. The Iraqi MoD is working hard to solve all problems.

sounds like nonsense to me.

just reread what they wrote. its 100% conjecture and negative stereotyping of iraqis... something that is almost de rigeur in the west due to the completely one sided propaganda about iraq for a good half a century.

Iam pretty sure that iraq is safer than many parts of USA and certainly latin america today. Whilst its true that iraq has budget problems and can't afford to buy new weapons... they still have active contracts with external contractors to keep existing equipment in use.

All the electronics and avionics in these aircraft are digital with very high MTBF... these are not some analogue electronics from 1975 that need constant care and attention to keep operational.

Finally, every single iraqi pilot on the F16s graduated from USA and iraq has plenty of low cost per hour LIFT aircraft to keep up their hours....

basically the entire article is a completely baseless derogatory attack on iraq.

Hayder, I don’t doubt the competence of our pilots or maintenance crews. But you can read between the lines that there are deep problems in the MoD/IQAF! IMHO, corruption is the main issue, followed by the fact that the Americans don’t trust the government! This article and the way they pull out and then send back LM support is all political maneuvering!
At the same time, I did talk to an F-16 pilot who confirmed that the T-50s are not flying at all! Which doesn’t make a lot of sense to me, since they have a lot in common with the F-16s and are much cheaper to fly!
I’m just worried that after all the hard work and sacrifices of the war against ISIS, the corrupt politicians will weaken the army/AF again, fearing a coup!!

the normal "iraqi government" way of never budgeting for parts is an issue. Seems to be an issue with the T50s now.

ironically the army aviation and ground forces seem to fare reasonably better, not sure what the secret is. i mean they are, if anything even more complex systems on the modern helos.

we always discuss these real issues here... but that scramble article is clearly written by someone who just wants to bash iraq and seems to not know anything about the country... something that we are well used to over the decades and can sniff a mile off.

The percentage of aircraft that participated in the parade, 23 out of 32, reached Iraq, meaning that the percentage of aircraft capable of flying more than 70% specifically 71.8, which is a high percentage. The inability of the aircraft to carry out combat missions as a result of the inability to maintain the avionics and radar, may be exaggerated, it is enough that they are in the air!
Yes, there is corruption, etc... But operating this number of aircraft is considered a good stage in the readiness of the Iraqi air force, especially the F-16s. What is clear, however, is the lack of readiness for the South Korean T-50Iq and L-159 aircrafts!. Which was never involved in the 100th anniversary of the Iraqi armed forces on 6 January 2021
